Reading log
_In the app: `/reading`_
The reading log lets you track every book your student reads in a school year—whether it's assigned reading from curriculum or free reading they choose. Logged books surface on transcripts and report cards as evidence, which is especially useful if your state expects a reading list at year-end evaluation.

Common questions
Can I edit a book after I've logged it?
No, there's no edit button. If you need to change something, delete the entry and log it again with the correct details.
Does the reading log track how many pages a student read per day?
No. You log the total number of pages in the book (optional), the start date (optional), and the finish date (optional). The system doesn't track session-by-session progress.
What happens to reading logs when I archive a student?
The reading log for that student will no longer appear in the Student dropdown (only active students show). You can still view past years' reading by selecting the appropriate school year in the School year dropdown.
Can the reading log be blank? Do I have to log something every week?
Yes, you can leave it blank. Logging is optional. It's most useful if your state requires evidence of reading at year-end or if you want a record on your student's transcript.
Is there a limit to how many books I can log per student per year?
No. The Family plan includes unlimited reading entries per student with no cap.
Where do the books I log show up?
Reading entries can surface on transcripts and report cards as evidence of coursework, depending on how you configure those documents. They are always stored in the Reading log itself.
Good to know
- If you have no students or no school years set up, you'll see a setup prompt instead of the reading log. Go to Settings > Students and Settings > School years to add them first.
- The reading log is per-student, per-school-year. Switching students or years filters what you see—it doesn't affect any saved data.
- Books are sorted by finished date (newest first), then by title. In-progress books (with no finished date) appear at the top of the list.
- The Title field is required and limited to 240 characters. Author is limited to 160 characters, and Notes to 2000 characters.
- Dates must be entered in calendar format (YYYY-MM-DD). You cannot type the date directly — use the date picker.
- If you assign a book (check 'Parent-assigned') and later want to mark it as free reading, you must delete it and log it again. There is no way to flip the assignment status after creation.
Plans
Included in the Family plan (monthly or annual). The reading log is available immediately — there is no per-student cap and no tier gatekeeping.
